Check out BeyondPod Podcast Manager if you’re into podcasts. BeyondPod Podcast Manager is really easy to use. The search function works well and finds most of the podcasts I’m looking for. Downloading podcasts is a cinch. I was starting to run into my data limit when I heavily streamed podcasts. Downloading podcasts on wifi before listening to them solved this problem. Once a podcast was downloaded, I wasn’t relying on constant data service so my podcast wouldn’t cut out if I was in a dead zone.

The free version is great but if you want to use the paid version, here are the differences from the BeyondPod FAQ:

Lite version has all the features of the Pro version except:

  • Scheduling of updates will be disabled
  • You will be able to update only one feed at a time
  • You can download only one podcast at a time

When using the Lite version, you can still add feeds, update, download and play your podcasts. The main limitation is that in order to get the latest episodes, you have to manually refresh each of your feeds using the circular “Refresh” button located in the top right corner the Feed Content View.

JustPictures is a powerful photo viewing app. JustPictures allows you to view your local pictures stored in your phone, pictures of your online sharing accounts as well as pictures other people have shared with you online.

JustPictures allows you to do just about anything you want with pictures. I like how you can perform actions on not only your own pictures but other peoples pictures as well. Most photo apps let you do whatever you want with your own pictures, but have limited access to other peoples pictures. With JustPictures you can send, share, save, set as wall paper, set as icon and many more options on other peoples pictures. JustPictures loads pictures relatively quick compared to some other picture viewing apps. Justpictures allows you to view pictures offline if they have been previously viewed and are still in the temporary cache.

JustPictures is one of the best picture viewing apps available for Android!

TuneIn Radio

Description: Browse and listen to radio — live, local and global.
Listen to the world.
TuneIn is a new way to listen to the world through live local and global radio from wherever you are. Whether you want music, sports, news or current events, TuneIn offers over 50,000 stations and 1.2 million on-demand programs for you to choose from. The TuneIn Radio app lets you take this entire experience with you on your Android device.
Important Update: This new version of TuneIn (5.3) includes Car Mode, which lets you listen to your favorite music, sports and news simply by speaking a command into your Android phone or tablet. This update also includes extra large buttons for easy viewing and control.

Cost: Free

Developer: Tunein Inc

TuneIn Radio is an amazing radio app that puts thousands of radio stations from all over the world in your hand. Catch the Boston Red Sox Game from San Francisco, or a recap of the New Zealand All Blacks game from Portland, Oregon. Not only can you tune into radio stations, you can find pre-recorded programs.

The car mode is extremely useful when listening in the car. With car mode, the buttons are bigger for easier viewing and use of touch commands. You can use the voice search function to minimize the use of your hands to operate TuneIn Radio. The voice search works well. I even tried to voice search for a hard to pronounce name like Jim Gaffigan, and TuneIn Radio found it.

TuneIn Radio allows for a large options of search criterias. Search by location, genre, artists, and languages.

Not all stations are available on TuneIn radio. A few of the popular stations in my local area are not available. The stations are still listed, but if you click on them, TuneIn radio will redirect you to a similar stations. If there isn’t an icon next to the station, it’s not available.

TuneIn radio may not completely replace a radio tuner for local radio stations, but it does a damn good job, unless your favorite radio stations aren’t available.

QuickPic is much better and has way more options than the stock Android gallery app.

With QuickPic, you can:

  • View pictures and videos quickly
  • Edit and crop pictures
  • Change resolution and size
  • Create folders and move pictures to folders
  • Hide photos

I really like the function in QuickPic of being able to create folders and move pictures and videos to specified folders. It’s a shame the stock Android picture gallery doesn’t have the function of creating folders and moving pictures. QuickPic allows you to move multiple files with a few easy clicks.

Editing pictures is just as easy. You can only crop pictures in square/rectangles. Hopefully there will be more options in the future to crop pictures with other shapes. QuickPic is very intuitive and easy to learn to use.

QuickPic is easy to use and once you start using it, it will end up being your gallery of choice.

Every little bit of help matters when it comes to battery life with Android phones. Some times your phone could be draining battery life when you don’t even know it by constantly looking for a data signal when you think it’s in stanby mode. Or your screen brightness may be turned way up when you don’t need it to be.

An Android app I found to be extremely helpful with controlling battery consumption for free is Easy Battery Saver. Easy Battery Saver allows you to control a multitude of options to conserve battery usage. There’s a few preset modes, but I found the Advanced Customized mode to be the most useful.

Easy Battery Saver allows you to change things like:

  • Screen brightness
  • Network settings
  • Schedule when to conserve battery
  • What apps are allowed to be used when conserving battery
  • Auto Sync
  • Bluetooth usage
  • Screen time out

The battery consumption screen is much more helpful and displayed better usage stats than my stock battery usage screen.

Most of the preset modes turn off data when the phone is on stanby, so if you’re streaming music and the phone screen is off, you will lose data. You may want to turn off Easy Battery Saver or put it in “Normal Mode” when streaming music.

There’s a few battery optimization apps available for free and paid. Easy Battery Saver is one of the best ones, especially since it’s free!

Kyte Phone

Description: Kyte Phone turns any Android into a kids-friendly phone with full parental controls and GPS tracking.

Once parents log in, Kyte takes over the device with a friendly, playful UI from which kids cannot exit. Kids can then call and receive calls from a list of parent-approved numbers and play any apps and games parents enable.

Using their web dashboard, parents can see their child’s latest location and get a summary of all activity on the phone, including games played and calls made. Parents can also quickly change who their kids can call and which games they can play, with everything synced automatically.

For more information, visit us at www.kytephone.com

Cost: Free

Developer: KytePhone

To all the parents, I’d like to introduce you to Kyte Phone.

If you ever have to let your kid borrow your phone without messing it up, use Kyte Phone to set permissions and limit what they can access. With Kyte Phone, you can set what phone numbers they can dial and what apps they can access. Once Kyte Phone is launched, you can’t exit out of Kyte Phone without the password. Even if you try to restart the phone when Kyte Phone is launched, Kyte Phone will stay launched at start up.

When Kyte Phone is launched, you can check from the Kyte Phone website:

  • When the Kyte Phone app was launched
  • Call logs
  • When and what apps have been used
  • A map of where the phone is

To set up accessible apps, go on the Kyte Phone web site and they will have a list of apps you have downloaded from the Google play store. They won’t have apps that you did not download via the Google Play store. Highlight the apps you want to show up on your phone. The apps on the Kyte Phone web site don’t seem to be organized in any order, so finding apps can be tedious.

Setting up contacts is a little tedious also. It doesn’t pull up your contacts, so you have to manually enter every number you want accessible. Too bad it can’t pull up your contact list to check which contacts you want to add. You can manually set a picture to each contact after it’s added.

There’s no texting support either.

Kyte Phone is new so I’m sure improvements will be me to made to make Kyte Phone even better.
