Developer: NBA

NBA Game Time 2011-2012 is a great way to follow the NBA, but not to watch it.

With the basic edition you get scores, schedules , news and videos of highlights for the past couple days. You have to sit through an ad before you watch a highlight video.

Upgrade to Game Time Plus for $7.99 to watch live game highlights and game recaps, live radio broadcasts, ad Free, and more.

Upgrade to NBA League Pass Mobile for $39.99 to watch Live Regular Season NBA Games + all the features of Game Time Plus. You also get access to archived games. Blackouts rules apply, you can see them here. The main things to note in the black out rules are games are blacked out if they are in your local market or if they are televised nationally on cable or NBA TV. So if you’re hoping to watch games of your local team, forget about it. If you’re hoping to watch teams like the Lakers or Heat, you’re going to miss a big chunk of games, because those teams are always playing on cable networks like TNT and ESPN. The streaming picture quality of the games are not great, but watchable. I blew up the picture to give you a sense of the quality to expect. The motion is smooth but pixelated as long as you have decent data speed. I’m don’t get any buffering at 4MBPS. For the price, I’m not sure it is worth it. I would say it might be worth it if the picture quality was better.

Veetle

Description: Watch & broadcast live streams in fast & crystal clear quality from veetle.com!

You can now “Go Live” from your Android devices with Veetle. Broadcast quickly and easily on your Android devices and view user-generated videos while on the go!

Broadcast live what’s happening around you in an easy to use interface with one button broadcasting. Quickly share your events with friends and family.

Version: 1.1.3

Cost: Free

Developer: Veetle Inc

Veetle is a great way to watch live streaming movies, TV shows and sports on your mobile device. Though due to copyright laws, a lot of the main stream sports aren’t streamed.

The streaming quality is smooth as long as I have adequate data speed.

Broadcasting yourself is a simple couple clicks on the “Go Live” icon. There’s a few seconds lag on broadcasting yourself. The quality of your broadcast is determined by your data speed. On 4G ~5 mbps, the quality was OK, on Wi-Fi, over 18 mpbs, the quality was very good.

Description: Mytubo – sharing life with effects

Note: it’s better to email us the issue/bug you’re experiencing. If you just post it in the review, we have not way to contact you for the detail of the problem, then it’s hard for us to fix that for you.

Our email is: contacts@mytubo.net

===============

Mytubo is a photo effects and sharing app. Take a snapshot with your phone, apply some old/dramatic/funky effects to it and share with your friends.

We’re trying to build a world where everyone can express his idea/emotion/view thru simple/casual visuals from mobile photography, instead of text or professional photos.

The creation process of mytubo is around two cores: 1.Make photo looks good. 2. Make sharing easy. For the 1st purpose we’ve created 14 effects. For the latter we’ve done a social network where everyone can share newest photos and interact with each other. The photo can also be shared easily to Facebook, Twitter, Email and SMS.

Version: 1.3.0

Cost: Free

Developer: Mytubo

mytubo is a wonderful app to easily share photos with other mytubo users or other social networks such as Facebook or Twitter. Like other social networks, you can follow, comment, and like other users photos.

Take a picture and apply some affects to make it look artsy. Post the picture and wait for the comments to start rolling in.

Some users have posted some really cool looking pictures. mytubo encourages using non copyrighted images so most pictures are real pictures from users.

mytubo has a lot of users from Asia.

The only qualm I have about mytubo is mytubo can some times take a while to load pictures on the main page. It’s strange though because the image loads right away when I click on the original picture. Other than that, mytubo is solid. mytubo has a simple interface and is easy to use from the get go.

Here’s another social network to join. mytubo!

Tourist Eye isn’t going to replace your travel guide books, but it can be a complement to them. Tourist Eye uses data from their users to create trips and destination recommendations for you. Destinations are separated into Attractions, Restaurants and Entertainment. Check TouristEye.com for more information on users and destinations.

The best thing about Tourist Eye is you can download the trip information to your phone so you don’t need to access data in order to view the trip. So if you’re in another country without a data plan, you can still use Tourist Eye as a guide to interesting destinations. You can view destination information and maps while your offline.

Most of Tourist Eye users seem to be from Europe at the moment so destinations in Europe are better covered than other areas.

Searching for cities on Tourist Eye can get annoying because it only displays the city and not the state or country the city is in. For instance, I searched for Paris and it gave me 2 locations labeled Paris. One was Paris, France, the other was Paris, Texas. I didn’t know which one was which until I went into the information for each Paris result. Another location with multiple locations was San Jose. San Jose was even worse with 5 different locations labeled San Jose. They we’re from San Jose, Costa Rica to San Jose, California, San Jose, Spain and San Jose, Mexico. There’s no way to view the cities without first adding it to your cities list.

The option to erase your city from your trip is messed up also. The visit and remove options are swapped.

With more users, I can imagine Tourist Eye getting better. There’s a good amount of destination information in major cities around the world already. The app needs a little work for a better user interface.

Developer: 10 Mile News

10 Mile News was able to find local news papers to the various zip codes I entered.  I tried entering zip codes from major cities as well as smaller cities like Bismarck, ND.

Some of the positives of 10 Mile News:

– It was able to find local news papers in all the zip codes I entered

– It found major news papers as well as smaller news papers.

– It was able to find newspapers based on my GPS location

– Headlines and snippets are helpful to browse through news stories

– You can get stories from local newspapers that you had no idea existed

Some of the negatives of 10 Mile News:

– Some times slow to load pages

– No way to bookmark or save news articles

– No way to search for news stories about a particular subject

– General navigation through the app was clunky.  It would some times force close or take forever to load pages.

10 Mile News isn’t an app I’d use to browse news stories, but like the description says, if you want to get some local news about a place you don’t know much about, it could be helpful.

iheartradio

Bookmark your favorite stations, view lyrics and enjoy on-demand content including exclusive performances, songs and intimate vignettes from today’s hottest music stars. We also feature some of the best talk stations in the USA.

Version: 2.2.2

Cost: Free

Developer: Clear Channel Radio Digital

iheartradio is more like ICan’tGetStationsUnlessI’mOnWiFiRadio. I’d really like iheartradio to work. I ride a commuter bus to and from work and there are tv’s on the bus which usually shows sporting events. The volume is turned down real low, so I can’t hear what the commentators are saying. I’m in the San Francisco area and there was a San Francisco Giants baseball game on so I tried to tune into one of the stations on iheartradio to follow the game. Sadly I couldn’t even find a local sports station. The number of stations are very limited. There we’re some sports stations for Rochester, Houston, Seattle, and more cities, but I didn’t find any local sports stations in the San Francisco Bay Area.

So I tried tuning into a random local station on 3G, but it would be stuck on “connecting”. The bus I ride has wi-fi, albeit really slow wi-fi around .5 Mbps, so I tried tuning in via the slow wi-fi connection. Low and behold it connected to the station after a minute or 2 of buffering. It only works on 3G once in a blue moon, but usually it’s stuck buffering or trying to connect. At home, when I try iheartradio on a fast wi-fi connection, it connects to the stations every time.

Connection problems aside, let’s skip to when it does work. The amount of local radio stations available are underwhelming. In the San Francisco area, there are 8 total stations. 1 traffic station, 2 talk radio stations, 3 Hip Hop / R & B stations, and 1 adult contemporary station. But there are a good amount of national channels ranging from Ryan Seacrest’s top 40 station, to Oldies, to Country, to Fox Sports, to White House briefings.

Once connected to a station, you can tag favorite songs, randomize radio stations, add stations to your favorite list. So unless you’re in constant range of a wi-fi connection iheartradio radio is useless.

Edit: 7/24/2011 – I’ve been hearing a lot of advertisements by iheartradio recently so I decided to give it another try since my original post was over a year ago. With app upgrades and better hardware since a year ago I wanted to see if things have changed. iheartradio is working like a charm now. I even tried running iheartradio on only 2G and I was able to pick up radio stations clearly without any buffering. Lack of local radio stations is still an issue. I couldn’t find any local sports radio stations in my area.

Kids Numbers and Math

Description: This app helps preschoolers learn numbers and develop pre-math skills. Numbers are prompted with a voice in English/Japanese/French/German/Italian/Russian.
Activities:
-learning numbers
-choose max/min number
-addition
-subtraction
-advanced exercises
-find a match

Shake the phone for more fun!

Version: 1.4.7

Cost: Free

Developer: Ivan Trusov

If I had a little 2 – 4 year old, I would totally get the kid to start playing around with this app. Then they can be like one of those smart little Asian kids who ruin the curve for everybody else in math. Oh wait, I’m Asian, so my kid probably won’t need this because they will naturally be smart at math.

Kids Number and Math offers 7 mini games to learn math principles. It ranges from the really simple like counting numbers to more advanced like adding and subtracting numbers. Each game has nice bright colors and big numbers.

As I previously stated in another review, I’m not letting a little kid touch my phone, so I’m going to try to get into the mind of a little kid and guess what they would think of Kids Numbers and Math. Each game on it’s own is entertaining, but with only 1 or 2 games on each math principle, a kid may get bored of it easily. For instance, the 1st game is on counting numbers. Then the next is to choose the min and max numbers. But after those 2 games, there’s nothing else on counting. So a kid would have to start adding and subtracting numbers before they start playing the other games. Other games include one game focused on subtracting, one on adding, and one on adding and subtracting, and a match numbers game.

The individual games are good and nicely done.  There’s not too much clutter on the screen to distract young children from focusing on the math at hand.  The spacing of objects  is good for clumsy little fingers.

Not a bad app to learn math but it would be better if there we’re more games focused on the different principles.

As for my kid, I’m going to throw an abacus at him, and he’ll be doing calculus by the time he’s 3.

Howcast

Description: Howcast for Android shows you fun, useful how-to videos wherever you are- when you’re out and about or just to lazy to get to your computer.

Next time you’re on the go with your Android phone, watch and learn How To Jump Start Your Car, How To Pick a Lock, How To Make a Mojito or just about anything – all with Howcast.

Version: 1.0.7

Cost: Free

Developer: Howcast

Are you dumb as a rock and need instructional videos on almost everything? Maybe you need to learn how to train a dog? Make a bloody mary? Being the life of the party? Howcast has instructional videos on these subjects and much more. Most of the videos are better than your average home video, so I’d consider them professionally done. Most have voice overs and graphical texts describing the process and start with the snappy Howcast Jingle.

Video quality is decent. Most are done in the same format with the same voice doing the voice overs. I was wondering how this worked, so I signed up for an account at Howcast.com to be a film maker. Howcast works by providing the subject matter, script, and voice over. Film makers create a video following the script and subject matter. Then the film maker submits the video to Howcast for approval. If the film is approved, the film maker gets paid from $50 – $300 based on various criterias which can be found at howcast.com. Howcast boasts this is a way for film makers to be seen and get their name out there.

Script writers can also apply to write scripts for Howcast.

There’s a large amount of videos, and some are very useful, while many more are just failures at being comical.

The text only option is helpful if you don’t want to watch the whole video or don’t have sound and want to just get an outline of the instructional process.

Howcast provides a quick and easy way to learn a new skill.

Gmote 2.0

Description: Turns your phone into a remote control for your computer, allowing you to start and control movies and music at a distance.

New 2.0

Streams music from your computer to phone!

Linux support

Control PowerPoint, image slide shows

Navigate and launch websites from phone

Acts as a WiFi touchpad/keyboard

Cost: Free

Developer: Marc Stogaitis & Mimi Sun

Gmote is an amazing app that allows you to control your computer with your phone. With Gmote, you can use your phone as a remote control to play music or videos from your computer either on the computer or on your phone or set up your phone to act like a mouse.

Setting up GMote was easy. To set up GMote, download the  GMote software to your computer.  Make sure your phone is on the same WIFI network as the computer is on. Connect to your computer either by name or IP address. Now you’re ready to play files on your computer with your phone.

I could see many uses for GMote. For instance if you’re in another room away from the computer and you wanted to watch a video clip of Megan Fox from your computer, you could watch it on your phone.  Or if somebody was on the computer and you wanted to play some music, you could play it with your phone. You could also use it as a controller to play power point slides in a demonstration.  I was really surprised how well GMote worked and how useful it could be.

Pandora Radio

Description: Pandora Radio is your own FREE personalized radio now available to stream music on your phone.  Start with the name of one of your favorite artists, songs or classical composers and Pandora will create a “Station” that plays their music and more music like it.  Already a Pandora User?  Just log in to enjoy your stations.

Version: 1.2

Cost: Free

Developer: Pandora

Pandora Radio will design a play list based on the artist or song you enter.  You’ll need to create an account with Pandora first.  As the song plays, it will show the album cover.  For instance I entered Jay Z and the songs that it played we’re from Jay Z, NAS, B.I.G.  When I entered John Denver, songs we’re played from James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel, and Elton John.  Too bad John Denver is gone.  A John Denver and Jay Z compilation would be DOPE!

The Quickmix feature creates a playlist from your created stations.  Log into the Pandora website to customize the Quickmix playlist and choose which stations to play from your created stations or play all stations.

While the song is playing, click on the “i” icon in the top right, and it will give a bio of the artist.  Thumbs up will cause the song to be played more often on your station and similar songs will play more often.  Thumbs down will cause the song to never play on your station again.  You can remove songs you set to thumbs up or thumbs down by logging into your account on Pandora.com and checking your station.

Select “menu” and you’ll have the option to Bookmark the song, Buy the song through Amazon, or share the song (though I couldn’t get the share to work).

Skips are only allowed 6 times an hour or 12 times a day.

I wouldn’t recommend Pandora on Edge.  It works great on 3G, but on Edge, the songs could take a while to load.  If you’re running low on memory while Pandora is playing, there’s a setting in the preferences to shutdown Pandora if Pandora is paused for a certain amount of time.

Edit – 3/19/2012. Pandora stopped working for me after an update. It would load to a black screen without playing anything.  The navigation bar would be showing. Pandora worked again after I uninstalled and reinstalled Pandora.
